WAEC CRS (CRK) ESSAY Answers 2024

NUMBER 1

(1a)

  1. Economic Strain: His extravagant projects created a heavy tax burden on the people, leading to significant economic hardship.
  2. Spiritual Decay: His tolerance for foreign gods and idols weakened Israel’s religious foundations, contributing to spiritual decay and political instability.
  3. National Division: His harsh treatment of the northern tribes incited rebellion, which ultimately resulted in the division of the kingdom after his death.

(1b)

  1. Hubris: Leaders who become overly proud and self-absorbed may lose touch with their people, resulting in selfish decisions.
  2. Self-Interest: When leaders prioritize personal gain over the welfare of others, it erodes trust and breeds resentment.
  3. Tyranny: Ruling through oppression and injustice creates widespread discontent and unrest among the populace.

NUMBER 2

(2a) (Pick Any Three)

  1. Opposition from Surrounding Peoples: The Jewish returnees encountered strong resistance from neighboring groups, such as the Samaritans, who actively worked to undermine the rebuilding efforts, even using political tactics to halt construction.
  2. Resource Scarcity: The returnees faced a lack of essential resources for reconstruction. Limited financial and material resources hindered their ability to obtain necessary building supplies, like timber and stone, for the temple.
  3. Internal Disunity: Disagreements and divisions among the Jewish returnees about how to proceed with the rebuilding process weakened their collective efforts and slowed down construction progress.
  4. Economic Hardship: Many returnees struggled with severe economic difficulties upon their return. Years of neglect had led to widespread poverty, making it challenging to focus on rebuilding the temple while trying to provide for their families.
  5. Political Instability: The returnees faced political instability both within the Persian Empire and from unsupportive local governors. Changes in political leadership often led to shifts in policies affecting the rebuilding process.
  6. Lack of Skilled Labor: After years of exile, many skilled workers and artisans necessary for constructing the temple were unavailable or unfit to work. This shortage of skilled laborers slowed down construction and affected work quality.

(2b) (Pick Any Three)

  1. Corruption: Corruption within government and public institutions diverts resources intended for development into private hands, undermining public trust and reducing the effectiveness of development programs.
  2. Poor Infrastructure: Inadequate infrastructure—such as roads, electricity, and water supply—hinders economic growth. It makes attracting investment difficult and slows down development.
  3. Political Instability: Frequent government changes, political conflicts, and inconsistent policies disrupt development initiatives, creating an uncertain environment that is not conducive to sustainable progress.
  4. Education System Deficiencies: An underfunded and poorly managed education system fails to equip the population with essential skills and knowledge, resulting in a workforce unprepared to drive development.
  5. Healthcare Challenges: Poor healthcare services lead to a less healthy population, negatively impacting productivity and economic growth. High disease rates and inadequate healthcare infrastructure create significant barriers to development.
  6. Economic Inequality: A significant gap between the rich and poor limits access to opportunities for many people. Economic inequality can lead to social unrest and diminish the overall economic potential of the country.
