The five largest and most popular clans in Igbo land in their order of population are:

1. Umudioka
2. Aro
3. Ezza
4. Nri
5. Ngwa

Every true Igbo person comes from either of these clans. The clans are widely spread across the length and breadth of Igbo land. No true Igbo person comes outside these five clans.

Umudioka people are majorly located in Anambra, Imo and Delta States. Only little fractions can be found in other states or territories that speak Igbo dialects in Nigeria.

Aro: Eru people are majorly found in Abia State. Their origin is in Abia State. They then spread to all other parts of Igboland. There’s nowhere one goes in Igboland that one won’t find the Aros. They traded on slavery in the old days. They were the first to encounter the missionaries in the days of our forefathers.
Aro people can be found in Ebonyi State in places like Ikwo LGA, Afikpo, Edda, Ohaozara, Onicha, Izzi, Ishielu and Ohaukwu LGAs. They’re of course, indigenes since they have lived there since time immemorial.
In Anambra State, they are the people of the following communities:

1. Ndiukwuenu, Ajalli, Ndiowu, Ndiokpala-eze, Ndikelionwu, Ndiokolo, some parts of Okija, Ekwulobia, Uga, etc. Any town that bears “Ndi…” belongs to the Aros.

In Enugu State, Aro is present in Nkanu East, Achi, Amokwe, Ezeagu and a little part of Nsukka. They also have a large chunk of domiciliation in Imo, Delta and Rivers State. In Rivers State, they are the people of Igwuruta, a community next to Portharcourt, Rivers State capital. Igwuruta is an urban community in the Ikwerre sub ethnic nationality. The largest chunk of Aro in Imo State is the Arondizuogu, Ideato North LGA of Imo State.

Ezza: Ezza clan is from Ebonyi State. They originated from Ezza South LGA of Ebonyi State with its cultural ancestry in Onueke, Ezza South LGA. They have two predominant LGAs in Ebonyi State: Ezza South and Ezza North LGAs. They’re large in Onicha LGA of the state. They are also large in Ohaukwu LGA. They are numerous in Ishielu LGA as well as Ivo LGA of Ebonyi State. They can also be found in Nkanu East, Nkanu West, Enugu East, Aninri, Nsukka, Awgu LGAs of Enugu State. They’re found also in large quantity in Benue State. They are found in Abia State, etc as indigenes, not just residents.

Nri: Nri is said to be the ancestral homeland of the Igbo. They’re basically found in Agukwu Nri, Anaocha LGA of Anambra State and other communities in South Eastern states of Nigeria.

Ngwa: Ngwa is a clan in Abia State. It spread across other states, moreover Imo State.
