Renowned highlife legend, Oliver De Coque, once performed at the Nsokara/Acharaukwu community in Ezza South LGA of Ebonyi State. This unforgettable event took place in 2002 during the chieftaincy title ceremony of High Chief Celestine Ekechi, who was honored as the Omemma 1 of Ezzaland.
This remarkable story was shared by Nwoba Chika Nwoba on his Facebook wall, recalling the grandeur of the occasion and the unexpected turn of events that led to Oliver De Coque’s performance.
A Historic Night of Wealth and Music
For many in the community, including a young observer who was in primary school at the time, it was their first time seeing Oliver De Coque perform live. His music equipment setup was said to be as massive as a two-storey building, an impressive sight that left the audience in awe.
The event was a spectacle of wealth and status, as money rained in abundance. At least ten Ghana-Must-Go bags were filled with cash that night, a display that fueled rumors of money ritualists being in town. Parents even warned their children to stay indoors due to the influx of wealthy individuals.
Interestingly, Oliver De Coque had initially been reluctant to accept the invitation. According to the story, he doubted the financial capacity of the community and hesitated to perform. However, when High Chief Celestine Ekechi presented a briefcase full of hard currency as kola, the legendary musician was stunned. Out of admiration, he performed free of charge and even composed a special song in honor of the chief, featuring lyrics like:
“Kojo Kojo, Onye Oma! Omemma of Ezzaland, Onyeoma!”
It is unclear whether the song was later recorded, but the performance left a lasting legacy.
The Rise of High Chief Celestine Ekechi (Kojo)
High Chief Celestine Ekechi, also known as “Kojo,” built his fortune in South Africa during a time when opportunities were abundant. He mentored and empowered several young men, many of whom remain in South Africa today, handling businesses on his behalf.
However, his rising influence attracted opposition from local politicians who saw him as a threat. Reports suggest that the Chief Whip of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly at the time worked against him, using government power to frustrate his community development efforts. Despite their resistance, he went ahead to fund road projects and build schools for his people.
Before venturing into business, Kojo was an officer in the Nigerian Army before moving to South Africa in search of greener pastures. His story is one of determination, wealth, and community impact.
Still a Force to Reckon With
Now in his mid-50s, High Chief Celestine Ekechi remains a respected and influential figure in Ezzaland. His military background and business acumen are still evident in his lifestyle. He continues to enjoy financial success and recognition, standing as a beacon of prosperity in his homeland.
