The Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Chinedum Orji has been impeached by eighteen of the twenty four membership of the Assembly. The Deputy Speaker, Hon. Ifeanyi Uchendu representing Ohafia South Constituency confirmed the impeachment while fielding questions from journalists.
A visual showing Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, Hon. Munachim Alozie, Solomon Akpulonu, Kelechi Onuzuruike, Hon. Okechukwu Igwe, Hon. Obinna Ichita, Hon. Chukwudi Apugo, among others were on the scene of the seating of the impeachment.
Iyierioba.com has gathered that the reason behind the sudden onslaught against the Speaker was his refusal to convene the House to begin an impeachment proceeding on the outgoing Governor of the state, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu over yet to be known misgivings. It’s believed that the eighteen members of the House will meet later in the week and elect new Speaker for the Assembly who’ll then initiate an impeachment process on the PDP’s Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.
Clandestine opinions suggest that the incoming Governor of the state, Dr Alex Otti is responsible for the crisis brewing in the House as he was seen some days now engaging the outgoing Governor in war of words, while the Governor has warned him to steer clear as his own tenure was yet to elapse.
- Dr Alex Otti of the Labour Party was returned elected against the candidate of the incumbent PDP at the 2023 governorship election in the state. Up till the time of filing this report, the State Government of Abia and the impeached Speaker was yet to react to the development.
