Question 1

Definitions in Clothing and Textiles:

  • Faggoting: A decorative stitching technique that joins two pieces of fabric with a narrow strip, often creating an open design.
  • Rouleau: A narrow fabric tube used for button loops or decorative features on garments.
  • Seam: A line where two pieces of fabric are stitched together.
  • Fibre: The basic unit of a textile, which can be natural (like cotton) or synthetic (like polyester).
  • Yarn: A long strand of fiber twisted together to create fabric.

(i) Two main groups of fibres:

  • Natural Fibres
  • Synthetic Fibres

(ii) Examples of each:

  • Natural Fibres: Cotton, Wool
  • Synthetic Fibres: Polyester, Nylon

(iii) Two processes used in constructing fabrics:

  • Weaving
  • Knitting

Question 2

Why Fitting is Necessary in Garment Construction: Fitting ensures that the garment fits well on the body, enhancing comfort and appearance.

Five Points to Consider When Fitting Garments:

  • Ease of movement
  • Proper length (sleeves, hem)
  • Accurate measurements (bust, waist, hips)
  • Fabric stretch and drape
  • Style and design lines

How to Assemble a Four-Gored Skirt with a Center Back Zipper:

  1. Cut out the four gored pieces of fabric.
  2. Join the front gore pieces together at the side seams.
  3. Attach the back gore pieces, leaving an opening for the zipper.
  4. Sew the center back seam, stopping where the zipper will be placed.
  5. Insert the zipper and finish the seam.
  6. Hem the bottom of the skirt.

Four Measurements Required for Drafting a Blouse Pattern:

(a) What is Pattern Alteration? Pattern alteration is changing or adjusting pattern pieces to fit different sizes or styles.

(b) How to Increase the Width of a Bodice by 8 cm:

  1. Mark the position on the bodice where you want to increase the width.
  2. Cut through the marked area.
  3. Place a strip of paper behind the cut edge and spread it out by 8 cm.
  4. Match the two sides to maintain the shape.

(c)
(i) What is a Seam? A seam is the line where two or more layers of fabric are stitched together.

(ii) Four Types of Seam:

  • Plain seam
  • French seam
  • Lapped seam
  • Overlocked seam
