It was founded in 1983 by a group of music enthusiasts, including the renowned composer and conductor Fela Sowande. MUSON aims to develop and enhance the appreciation of music in Nigeria by providing training, performance opportunities, and educational resources to musicians of all levels.
MUSON’s activities include concerts, music festivals, master classes, workshops, scholarships, and grants for talented young musicians. The organization also operates a music school that offers comprehensive music theory, performance, and composition training to students of all ages.

In addition to their central instrumental family, students are required to take two terms of an instrument minor. Voice students must also pass grade 2 piano, while instrumentalists must pass vocal techniques. Furthermore, all students must be part of the choir, and string majors are required to join the orchestra. Wind and percussion majors must be part of the band. However, individuals who are not majoring in these areas are still welcome to audition for the orchestra band.
The MTN Foundation scholarship scheme aims to attract high-performing full-time students studying in public tertiary institutions, including universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education in Nigeria. This scholarship program provides financial assistance to students who may face challenges paying for their tertiary education. Moreover, it aims to recognize and reward academic excellence as regards music.
