Last week, pictures of burnt houses surfaced on social media and they were said to have been coming from Awgbu community, Orumba North LGA of Anambra State. Iyierioba.com investigated the incident by visiting the community to hear from the natives. Behold, the story is a gory one.
On Thursday, armed robbers believed to be cultists stormed Oko community of the LGA in the night and robbed students of the Oko community, inflicting injuries on others. Information was passed across to the vigilante groups of border committees to mount checkpoints. On getting to Awgbu from where the armed robbers were to enter Nibo, Awka South LGA, a tipper double-crossed their tricycle. On sighting confrontation, the armed robbers jumped off and started shooting, but the vigilant men overpowered them.
Out of the four of them, three were caught and after interrogation, they were set ablaze. The tricycle rider who’s from Ebonyi State was lucky to have narrated how the armed robbers forced him to drive them around at gunpoint on time. The vigilant men spared him while the robbers found out to be from Nibo were set ablaze.
The next day, surviving members of their cult group stormed the community for revenge. They attacked buildings, shops and injured many, though could not find any of the vigilant men at their office at Eke Awgbu. After setting properties around ablaze, they announced that their second coming was going to be more gruesome.
The community of Awgbu has been left in pandemonium since last week the event took place as natives and residents of the community have continued running from popular spots and the Eke market of the community up till the time of filing this report.
