According to the Premium Times Newspaper, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has finalised preparation to investigate 28 governors whose tenures will be elapsing on the 29th of May, 2023 in reaction to the numerous petitions brought against them.
Among the governors and their deputies are Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State and his deputy, Hon. Mrs Cecilia Ezeilo, Ebonyi State governor, Engr David Umahi and deputy, Barr Dr Kelechi Igwe, Abia State governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu and deputy, Nasir Elrufai of Kaduna and his deputy, Governor of Kwara State, Abdulrahman Abdulfatah and his deputy among other governors and deputies.
Governor Umahi of Ebonyi State is one of the governors that are greeted with numerous petitions on graft and flagrant use of public funds for personal aggrandisement. Recently, the World Bank brought a petition against Mr Umahi which the body wrote and submitted to the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation alleging that the governor diverted a billionaire it sent to the state for social welfare package to the unemployed citizens of the state to cushion the effects of hunger and starvation gaining prominence under his administration. The petition was subsequently filed to the EFCC waiting for the day he would step out of office as Governor of Ebonyi State.
Also, many petitions have been brought against Governor Umahi from Ebonyi State all pointing to the fact that he has allegedly stolen some huge sums of money from the LGA accounts, projects inflation, budget misappropriation, diversion of different figures originally aimed at fixing the economy of the state and pay salaries to civil servants. Umahi shall be probed over his adoption of direct labour mechanism of executing public infrastructural projects which it’s alleged goes aloof accountability and due process.
All things being equal, as soon as the governor leaves office on Monday, 29th of May, 2023, the anti graft agency may pick him up to answer the several petitions brought against him by organisations and individuals both from and outside Ebonyi State.
