FG Denies Scrapping JAMB Requirement for Admission into Tertiary Institutions
According to a report by Punch Newspaper, the Federal Government has debunked claims that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is no longer required for gaining admission into tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
Viral social media posts had alleged that the Federal Government abolished the use of JAMB for admissions into universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education, suggesting that institutions would now conduct their own entrance examinations.
However, in a statement released on Thursday by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Education, Boriowo Folasade, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, described the claim as false and baseless.
“At no point did the Ministry issue or authorise any statement suggesting that JAMB is no longer mandatory for admission into tertiary institutions,” Alausa clarified.

The Minister reaffirmed that JAMB remains the legally empowered body responsible for conducting entrance examinations and coordinating admissions into all tertiary institutions in the country.
He further noted that the established admission process through JAMB remains fully operational, urging Nigerians to disregard any contrary reports.
Alausa also advised the public especially prospective students, parents, and tertiary institutions to rely solely on official communication channels of the Ministry of Education and JAMB for accurate information concerning admission policies.
“We remain committed to protecting the integrity of the admission process and ensuring that merit and due process guide all admissions into higher institutions,” the Minister added.
He warned media outlets, bloggers, and online platforms to refrain from spreading unverified information capable of causing confusion in the education sector.
“Misinformation capable of creating unnecessary panic within the education system must be avoided,” Alausa cautioned.
The Minister concluded by reaffirming that there has been no change in JAMB’s role, which remains central and indispensable to Nigeria’s tertiary education admission framework.
