The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has provided helpful materials on English Language to help you prepare for the final exam, which will start on Wednesday, 15th May, 2026. The exam will consist of English Language 2 (Essay) and English Language 1 (Objective) (Oral Test). These materials are designed to guide you on what is expected and how to perform your best in the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

WAEC English Language 2026: Subscription, Syllabus, and Exam Details

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has provided comprehensive materials to help candidates prepare for the English Language exam in 2025. How to Subscribe

  1. Buy MTN cards of N800 (400 + 400 = 800).
  2. Go to your message, type the card pins correctly, and send to #########.
  3. Do not call; just text. If the card pins are valid, a confirmation reply will be sent.
  4. Relax and wait for your answers 30 minutes before or after the exam starts.

2025 WAEC English Language Syllabus

The 2025 WAEC English Language syllabus applies to both school and private candidates. It tests candidates’ ability to communicate in English through reading, writing, and speaking, assessing comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and listening skills.

Preamble

This examination aims to evaluate candidates’ basic skills in English communication through speech and writing. It assesses both receptive and productive abilities, including reading comprehension, summary, vocabulary, lexis, grammar, listening, and recognition of spoken English.

Aims and Objectives

The syllabus measures how well candidates have achieved the objectives of secondary school English teaching. It focuses on:

  • Using correct English
  • Writing appropriately for different audiences and situations
  • Organizing material in coherent paragraphs
  • Controlling sentence structures accurately
  • Using a variety of sentence patterns
  • Complying with grammar rules
  • Correct spelling and punctuation
  • Comprehending written and spoken English
  • Recognizing implied meanings, tones, and attitudes
  • Using acceptable pronunciation
  • Recognizing physical characteristics of English sounds and letters
  • Summarizing relevant information from passages

Scheme of Examination

The WAEC English Language exam consists of three papers:

Paper 1: Objective / Multiple Choice (1 hour, 40 marks)

For candidates in Nigeria, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia:

Lexis (Vocabulary) Everyday vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, figurative usage, and collocations 40
Structural Sequence of tenses, pronoun matching, prepositions, and other grammar rules 40

Paper 1 for Ghana

80 questions divided into two parts: Part A (Lexis and Structure) and Part B (Literature).

  • Part A: Lexis (30 questions) – Tests everyday and field-specific vocabulary, synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms.
  • Part A: Structure (20 questions) – Tests grammar knowledge, word forms, sentence patterns, and use of structural words.
  • Part B: Literature (30 questions) – Tests comprehension, analysis, and interpretation of literary texts.

Paper 2: Essay and Comprehension (2 hours, 100 marks)

Includes 5 essay topics and 1 comprehension passage. Candidates must:

  • Write an essay on one selected topic
  • Answer all questions on the comprehension and summary passages

Paper 3

(Not specified in the syllabus provided, but usually taken as a composite paper with Papers 1 and 2.)

Note: Papers 1 and 2 are taken at one sitting for school candidates. Candidates should carefully prepare for both sections to maximize performance.
