2024 English Language WAEC Syllabus:  

The 2024 WAEC Syllabus for English language is available below. Please note that this syllabus applies to both school candidates and private candidates

Preamble

This examination aims to test candidates’ basic skills in communicating in English through speech and writing, assessing their receptive and productive abilities in reading, comprehension, summary, vocabulary, lexis, structure, listening comprehension, and recognition of spoken English.

Aims and Objectives

The objective of this syllabus is to measure the extent to which candidates have achieved the aims of their secondary school English teaching syllabuses. The examination aims to test candidates’ ability to:
  1. Use correct English
  2. Write appropriate English for specified audiences and situations
  3. Organize material in coherent paragraphs
  4. Control sentence structures accurately
  5. Exhibit variety in sentence patterns
  6. Comply with grammar rules
  7. Spell and punctuate correctly
  8. Comprehend written and spoken English
  9. Recognize implied meaning, tones, and attitudes
  10. Use acceptable pronunciation
  11. Recognize physical characteristics of English sounds and letters
  12. Summarize relevant information from set passages

Scheme of Examination

The examination consists of three papers:

Paper 1

  • Multiple-choice questions: 80 questions, 1 hour, 40 marks

Paper 2

  • Essay and comprehension/summary: 5 essay topics, 1 passage, 2 hours, 100 marks
    • Write an essay on one topic
    • Answer all questions on the comprehension and summary passages

Paper 3

  • (Not specified in the provided text, but assumed to be a separate paper)
Note: Papers 1 and 2 are a composite paper taken at one sitting.

For candidates in The Gambia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Liberia only

Part A: Lexis and Structure
  • Lexis (30 questions)
    • Tests knowledge of everyday vocabulary and general vocabulary associated with various fields of human activity, including:
      • Building
      • Plumbing
      • Fishing
      • Finance (commerce, banking, stock exchange, insurance)
    • Focuses on sense relations, synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms
  • Structure (20 questions)
    • Tests knowledge of grammatical structures, including:
      • Word-form changes (number, tense, degree, etc.)
      • Patterns of word combination (groups and sentences)
      • Use of structural words (conjunctions, determiners, prepositions, etc.)
Part B: Literature (30 questions)
  • Tests knowledge of literature, including comprehension, analysis, and interpretation of literary texts
