2024 WAEC Fisheries Essay (Theory) Answers


Question 1

(1a) Definitions:

(i) Fishing Gear: These are tools and equipment used for fishing activities, such as rods, nets, and lures.
(ii) Fishing Craft: This refers to boats or vessels used for fishing operations in water bodies.

(1b) Types of Fish Harvesting:

(i) Partial Harvesting:

  • This involves selectively harvesting only mature fish from the pond while leaving younger fish to continue growing.
  • It ensures continuous production and a steady supply of fish over time.

(ii) Complete Harvesting:

  • This method involves harvesting all the fish in the pond at once.
  • After the harvest, the pond is typically drained, cleaned, and restocked with new fish.

(1c) Steps in Fish Breeding:

(i) Select Broodstock: Choose healthy, mature fish for breeding.
(ii) Administer Hormones: Use hormones to stimulate spawning in selected broodstock.
(iii) Collect Eggs and Sperm: Extract eggs from female fish and sperm from male fish.
(iv) Fertilize Eggs: Combine the eggs and sperm for fertilization.
(v) Incubate: Hatch the fertilized eggs in a controlled environment.
(vi) Manage Hatchery: Provide care for the larvae until they mature into juvenile fish.

(1d) Differences between Male and Female Fish:

(i) Appearance: Males and females often have physical differences in size, coloration, or body shape.
(ii) Reproductive Organs: Females possess ovaries, while males have testes.
(iii) Secondary Traits: Males may develop distinctive features or markings, especially during the breeding season.

Fisheries (Alternative A) Syllabus for Ghanaian Candidates

Preamble:


Fisheries play a crucial role in the economic development of West Africa. This syllabus aims to assess learners’ knowledge and entrepreneurial skills in fisheries and related vocations, as well as their practical knowledge and skills in fisheries.

Aims and Objectives

The syllabus seeks to assess candidates on the following:

1 Importance of fisheries in socio-economic development of West Africa
2 Dangers of overfishing practices
3 Regulations governing fishing practices in the country
4 Differences between freshwater, brackish water, and marine habitats and resources
5 Skills in fish farming
6 Basic entrepreneurship skills in fisheries-related vocations and business
7 Effects of water pollution on fishery resources
8 Fish preservation and processing techniques
9 Basic biology of fishes
10 Basic fish health management

Requirements

To successfully implement this syllabus, the following requirements must be met:
Requirements Description
1 Schools must have at least an aquarium and a fish pond/concrete tank
2 Study of fisheries must be supplemented by visits to established fish farms, research institutions, fishing companies, and related institutions
3 Candidates must keep practical notebooks recording laboratory and individual observations, field trips, and specimen collections
4 Schools must prepare an album of fishery organisms, fishing gear and craft, and different fish rearing facilities and equipment for teaching purposes

Examination Scheme

The examination consists of three papers: Papers 1, 2, and 3, all of which must be taken.

Paper 2 Essay-Type Questions (6 questions, answer 4) 2 hours 80 marks (20 marks each)

Note:
  • Papers 1 and 2 will be a composite paper, taken at one sitting.
  • Paper 3 will consist of three questions, all of which must be answered within 2 hours.
