Biology WAEC Syllabus:    

The 2024 WAEC Syllabus for Biology is available below. Please note that this syllabus applies to both internal and external candidates

Preamble

This examination syllabus is drawn from the curricula of West African Examinations Council member countries and should be used alongside the appropriate teaching syllabus(es) of the country where candidates are domiciled. The syllabus is divided into three sections: A, B, and C.

Aims and Objectives

This syllabus aims to assess candidates’ understanding of:
  1. Structure and functions of living organisms and appreciation of nature
  2. Laboratory and field skills in Biology
  3. Scientific skills: observing, classifying, and interpreting biological data
  4. Basic knowledge in Biology for future advanced studies
  5. Scientific attitudes for problem-solving
  6. Application of biological principles in everyday life
  7. Interrelationships between Biology and other scientific disciplines

Scheme of Examination

There will be three papers: Papers 1, 2, and 3, all of which must be taken. Papers 1 and 2 will be a composite paper taken at one sitting.

Paper 1

  • Fifty multiple-choice objective questions from Section A of the syllabus
  • 50 marks, 50 minutes

Paper 2

  • Six essay questions from the entire syllabus
  • Three sections: A, B, and C
  • Section A: Four questions from Section A of the syllabus (20 marks each)
  • Section B (Ghana only): Short-structured questions (30 marks)
  • Section C (Nigeria, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and Liberia only): Short-structured questions (30 marks)
  • Candidates will answer two questions from Section A and all short-structured questions from either Section B or C
  • Total score: 70 marks, 1 hour 40 minutes

Paper 3 (Practical Test)

  • School candidates: 2 hours, three sections: A, B, and C
  • Private candidates: Test of practical work
  • Section A: Two compulsory questions from Section A of the syllabus (25 marks each)
  • Section B (Ghana only): One question from Section B of the syllabus (30 marks)
  • Section C (Nigeria, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and Liberia only): One question from Section C of the syllabus (30 marks)
  • Candidates will answer all questions in Section A and one question in either Section B or C
  • Total score: 80 marks
